Product Care

All Sticks art and furniture is carefully finished with low VOC water-based polyurethane to withstand everyday use for years to come!

For general care, we recommend:

  • Use mild soap and water to clean your pieces. Please do not use abrasive cleaning solutions.
  • Spills on pieces like a lazy susan or dining table are OK, but immediately wipe up any liquids and dry the area completely. Be mindful of extra moisture from drinking glasses and vases. Use coasters as needed.
  • Avoid direct contact with the extreme heat of dishes please use hot pads or trivets.
  • Avoid high amounts of sun to prevent fading as the polyurethane finish is not UV protectant.

Other quick tips:

  • Our wall plaques are intended to be admired as artwork, please don't use as a trivet.
  • We ask that you do not put a piece of glass on any Sticks piece, it may ruin the finish instead of protecting it.
  • Sticks art and furniture is not intended for outdoor use.

Wooden Furniture Refinishing:

All wooden furniture that has any type of protective top-coat will require refinishing periodically depending on the ware.  Sticks uses a water-based polyurethane satin that is sprayed on using a professional air-assist spray gun system.  Any professional furniture refinisher could lightly sand down your Sticks piece and multi-coat spray on fresh finish coats. We have had great success finding furniture refinishers on Yelp.  https://www.yelp.com Search for: Furniture Refinishing

*Furniture refinishing professionals may contact John McManus, our Operations Director, for refinishing guidance: 515-259-1500 or jmcmanus@sticks.com.

Process overview:
Lightly sand down the top with superfine P220, air-spray off the dust, and then multi-coat with water-based clear satin polyurethane.
   Between each coat:
      – Allow the table to dry
      – Lightly hand-sanded with P180 sanding blocks
      – Air-spray off the dust
      – Add another coat of polyurethane
      – Repeat  (3-4 coats would be ample.)

Leather Care:

Over time, Sticks leather will show wear and tear similar to leather car seats. We seal in the paint our artists use on top of natural leather crust with an industrial top coat made by Mohawk.  If the leather becomes very worn, the only option is to replace or locate a company that specializes in leather restoration.  Sticks does not provide leather restoration services. We can only offer guidance on how to clean or preserve leather where the topcoat is worn off.

Leather Cleaning:
The cleaning product we recommend:
https://www.amazon.com/Mohawk-Leather-Cleaner-II-M850-10024/dp/B08N557CW2
It’s specifically formulated for the Mohawk leather top coat we use. Note: use with caution to avoid an abundance of product accumulating in stitching.

Leather Refinishing:
If your Sticks leather piece is overall in good condition but the finish has worn off, fresh coats of protective finish can be applied using a professional air assist spray gun system.  Any professional upholstery shop could spray on fresh coats of Mohawk top coat finish. We have had great success finding furniture refinishers on Yelp.  https://www.yelp.com Search for: Upholstery Repair or Leather Repair

Leather Restoration:
Santa Fe Furniture Repair (https://www.santafefurniturerepair.com) has worked on Sticks leather products that required restoration.  The company can add back in color, repair, and refinish. This may provide insight into local companies that provide similar services.

Leather Replacement:
Sticks does not provide leather restoration services, but we can replicate and replace worn leather surfaces. For Sticks to provide this service, the original leather will need to be sent to our production studio. Customers can either send their entire piece to us for repair, or they can extract just the leather element from the current piece.  If you would like a quote or more information on this service, email onlinesales@sticks.com. Please include photos of your product and provide your contact information.
